Quality Emulsified Asphalt

Associated Asphalt’s line of emulsified asphalts provide an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and adaptable product for a wide range of construction and maintenance projects. We carefully blend asphalt, water, and emulsifying agents to create an environmentally friendly asphalt that requires lower temperatures, and is cost-effective for construction and maintenance projects. Emulsified asphalt is known to produce minimal to no hydrocarbon emissions or fumes, as there is no need for hot mixing.

Our emulsified asphalts are capable of fulfilling the needs of a variety of projects including: Bituminous Surface Treatment/Asphalt Surface Treatment, Fog Seal, Prime Coat, Tack Coat, Non-Tracking Tack/Reduced-Tracking Tack, Cold In-Place Recycling, and Full Depth Reclamation.

Our emulsion asphalt products are manufactured at four of our terminals and are designed to be handled, shoveled, and tamped with ease:
● Bristol, VA
● Roanoke, VA
● Columbia, SC, our SEACO Asphalt Emulsions facility
● Tampa, FL

We produce emulsified asphalts at a variety of setting times, temperature requirements, and charge through the blending of asphalt, water, and emulsifying agents at varying levels.

Fog Seal

A fog seal is a cost-effective single application preservation treatment method for sealing hairline cracks and preventing raveling on open graded surfaces. Fog Seal is applied onto existing pavement surfaces to renew oxidization. A bi-product of fog seal application is that it improves the pavement’s appearance.

Benefits: Cost effective; improves surface appearance; seals minor cracks and surface voids; inhibits raveling

Bituminous Surface Treatment/Asphalt Surface Treatment (BST, AST, Chip Seal)

Bituminous surface treatment (BST) is often referred to as a chip seal or seal coat. It is a thin surface treatment of liquid asphalt covered with a layer of embedded aggregate. BST commonly serves as a maintenance application for flexible pavements with lower traffic volumes.

Benefits: Provides a new skid resistant wearing surface; prevents raveling; seals minor cracks; decelerates asphalt deterioration

Prime Coat

A prime coat is an application of a low viscosity asphalt to a granular base in preparation for an initial layer, or surface course layer, of asphalt. If a road surface has been left untreated, priming would be used to incorporate a bituminous binder into the compacted asphalt.

A prime coat permeates the pavement surface and serves as a stabilizer by thickening the upper portion into a hydrophobic layer. Projected paving, expectation for time lapses, and the potential for inclement weather all influence the need and urgency of applying a prime coat.

Benefits: Cost effective; reduces the risk of base failure; reduces potential impact of inclement weather; curtails risk of traffic damage

Tack Coat

Tack coat is a critical, long-term performance enhancer of asphalt pavement that is proven to be effective in ensuring proper bonding between layers of asphalt.

Tack coat is applied using a sprayer and can be used either prior to an overlay or between layers of new asphalt concrete.

Benefits: Can prevent debonding that would potential lead to significant road failure; allows for the capacity to save up to 100% to the cost of a top lift

Non-Tracking Tack/Reduced-Tracking Tack

Non-Tracking Tack/Reduced Tracking Tack are similar to standard tack in that they’re an emulsion that is used to bond layers of asphalt. However, Non-Tracking Tack/Reduced Tracking Tack are formulated for faster curing than traditional tack coats while also presenting a finish that is both non-tracking and non-tacky to significantly reduce the loss of tack coat.

Benefits: Less clean up than traditional tack coat; minimal loss of tack coat; creates bonds between layers of asphalt

Cold In-Place Recycling

Cold In-Place Recycling is a cost-effective, long-lasting pavement rehabilitation technique in which the existing pavement materials are treated and reused in place to recycle the upper few inches of asphalt using a train operation and no heat.

Benefits: Environmentally friendly in that it reduces greenhouse emissions by up to 90% while also reducing trucking requirements and improving efficiency

Full Depth Reclamation

Full Depth Reclamation is an in-place recycling method for reconstruction of existing flexible pavements that utilizes existing pavement materials as the base for the renovated pavement surface. Full Depth Reclamation is an alternative to deep rehabilitation or traditional removal/replacement techniques that is environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and long-lasting.

The entire thickness of the asphalt pavement (and predetermined portion of the underlying materials) is pulverized and blended to provide an upgraded, homogeneous material when implementing the Full Depth Reclamation technique.

Benefits: Environmentally friendly (100% reuse of existing materials); cost effective compared to alternative, traditional methods; allows for reduction of materials and material transportation
