Roanoke native Wendi Basham joined the Associated Asphalt family in March of 2022 as an Executive Administrator. Coming from a lively background of working with local government, Wendi brings her expertise to her day-to-day life at Associated Asphalt.
“I found out Associated Asphalt was hiring and I just said ‘I have to apply to this job,'” Wendi mentions. “I got it and it seemed like everything fell into place.” Wendi worked with local police departments and fire and rescue departments in similar roles for over 10 years prior to joining the team. While the work of an Executive Administrator remained consistent between Wendi’s career, the atmosphere and culture of Associated Asphalt are completely different.
“When I got off the elevator, I just thought to myself, ‘I’m supposed to be here, this was meant to happen,'” Wendi mentions. The culture and the way employees were valued stunned Wendi, “It’s so nice to be appreciated. If you mess up, learn from your mistakes – but you’re human and Associated Asphalt understands that.”
Wendi enjoys the opportunity to get to work with different people and different tasks. “Every day is different, but I like that change of pace,” Wendi mentions. She appreciates the culture change in her professional life because it helped transform her personal life. “Being a family-oriented company, I feel safe to take time off in case one of my kids gets sick or something else happens,” she mentions. “Having that peace of mind and being able to turn off at the end of the day is wonderful.”
When asked what is the most important thing she’s learned so far from being a team member at Associated Asphalt, Wendi goes on to say, “I’m learning things every day, but I’ve enjoyed hearing the different perspectives my coworkers have about doing their jobs most efficiently.” Fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their perspectives is a trait Associated Asphalt prides themselves on.
Wendi has lived in Roanoke all her life. She currently lives with her husband and son in the city, where they own two dogs, two cats, and four chickens! Wendi loves traveling out of town and shopping at the best outlet stores, and taking a break to stop for sushi or Chinese food. She loves to travel and go sightseeing with her family. Last summer, she traveled to Sedona and the Grand Canyon, and plans to travel to Austin, Texas next year!
