Project Spotlight: Florida’s Keystone Airpark Chooses StellarFlex FR®

The original Keystone Heights Airport was first constructed by the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 when air fighting had entered its heyday during World War II. During this time, it served as the site of the AAFSAT Strategic Reconnaissance School until 1945. Fast forward to today, branches of Military still use the airport for training and plays host to private corporations that provide military and paramilitary training through Government contracts. Several flight contests and community events are also hosted here throughout the year.

This project began in September 2019 and was part of a phased rehabilitation of the re-fueling apron at the airpark. V.E. Whitehurst was awarded the project with AECOM as the consulting engineer firm. Associated Asphalt supplied StellarFlex FR® to V.E. Whitehurst for the final surface layer of P-404 for the re-feuling apron.

This was the second project that Associated Asphalt completed by our customer that utilized StellarFlex FR® and was the second project that the consulting engineer, Bill Prange of AECOM, specified this material in the state of Florida. This project was part of extensive growth in the Florida market for Associated Asphalt and we look forward to continuing to provide this high quality product for projects in 2020.

Project Highlight: Beaver County Airport, Home of Restored Military Aircrafts, Receives a Restoration of Its Own

Not all air aprons need to be built to resist the jet fuel of a Boeing 747. In fact, the Beaver County Airport in Beaver Falls, PA primarily hosts historic military aircrafts that have been restored over the years.

Home of the Thunder Pig

Beaver County Airport is the home of Air Heritage Inc.’s Aviation Museum and restoration facility. In 1983, a group of aviation enthusiasts formed the Air Heritage of Western Pennsylvania, later becoming Air Heritage Inc. after a surge in membership. This organization set out to restore military aircrafts from the past, starting with an L-21B.

The facility is also home to the famous “Thunder Pig” C123K, an aircraft you may recognize from movies such as “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “American Made” with Tom Cruise.

See Air Heritage Inc.’s full list of aircrafts.

About the Project

When it came time to make sure that the apron at Beaver County Airport was in tip-top shape for museum visitors and the restoration teams, Lindy Paving, a nationally recognized paving company, was contracted to complete the project. Associated Asphalt was subcontracted to provide StellarFlex FR® to assure that the new asphalt surface would resist rutting and cracking as a result of jet fuel exposure.

The P-601 (now P-404) mix was processed at Lindy Paving’s Koppel, PA plant, beginning July 2019. 309 tons of hot mix was produced and laid at a 4 inch thickness.

If you find yourself near Beaver Falls, PA, we encourage you to visit Air Heritage Museum to see all of the hard work these aviation enthusiasts have put into preserving a piece of American history! You may spot some high-quality fuel-resistant asphalt while you’re there.

Employee Spotlight: David Lind, Tampa Terminal Manager

David Lind is one of the few people who can say that what they do is in their blood. Coming from three generations of working in the asphalt industry, David says it was “faith, destiny, or opportunity” that led him to being the Terminal Manager at one of our Tampa, Florida locations.

Growing With The Company

Until the early 2000s, David’s family owned their own asphalt operation. In 2007, Associated Asphalt bought the Lind family operation and offered David the opportunity to work at the terminal.

“Associated Asphalt made sure I had a path forward. They challenged me to take on new roles. Personal and career development were always available,” says David.

In His Own Words

David describes his work with his team members as very hands-on. He’s not a behind the scenes style of manager. Although he manages 10 team members, he makes sure to spend time with each of them individually.

“I am a very hands on manager. I work closely with the operators in my terminal. I enjoy getting to know the employees on a personal level in order to help motivate them on a professional level,” David says.

Outside of the terminal, you can find David enjoying downtime with his family, fishing, or hitting some hiking trails. If you’re lucky, you may even see his band preforming at a wedding or two!
